ASB GetWise

On Monday and Tuesday this week, a charitable man named Jeff Clark visited NBC to advise us about money. He taught all classes throughout the school. As a trained actor he was able to express his message effectively. The Year 7 & 8 students learnt how to create a “GWYWP” (Get What You Want Plan). To make a GWYWP, you need to subtract your monthly expenses from your monthly income. The sum of that equation is how much you save each month. Knowing that will help you figure out how to get what you want and ensure you do not get into debt. Afterwards, we played an entertaining game in groups of four. We were given $1800 (fake money) to spend on a holiday in Fiji and were given scenarios with choices. Each choice had a price, but you also earned entertainment points every time you paid. During the game, we were given the opportunity to purchase items like medical insurance, plane tickets, a hotel, food and activities. The group with the most entertainment points at the end of the game won. It was a fun and challenging activity.

Women's Suffrage Petition

Women’s Suffrage Petition
“I felt something to be proud of.” Kate Sheppard announced after the women’s suffrage petition had been deposited to parliament in July 1893. The petition was signed by beyond 25,000 women. The petition requested permission for women living in New Zealand to be allowed to vote. Many men stated that a woman’s “proper place” was located at home. A few months after the petition was bestowed, a law was created that supplied all women living in New Zealand the permission to vote. New Zealand was the first country to let women vote. Kate Sheppard remains New Zealand’s most famous suffragette.

About Pomeranians

Pomeranians are my favourite type of dogs. When I'm older, I would really like to have my own. In this slideshow, I shared many interesting facts about them.

Did you learn anything new about Pomeranians?

Footstep Challenge

In Term 2, Room 1 was assigned a Footstep Challenge. The task was to make an area of our garden at home look admirable. I hope you enjoy this slideshow I have created to show what I have done. Please leave a comment!

Why We Should Wear Our Sports Uniform As School Uniform

Why We Should Wear Our Sports Uniform As School Uniform

I would like to subsidise my point of view on why we should wear our sports uniform as school uniform. I strongly assume we are cemented in our unexciting school uniforms.

#1 Our Sports Uniform Is Warmer And More Comfortable

Our sports uniform provides more comfort than our regular school uniform. No girl will have to worry about their skirts flying up in windy weather, and no boy will have to worry about freezing to death in their thin school shorts! Talking about “freezing to death”, can you imagine how warm we would be in the shivering cold winter days? Also, as you know it’s boiling hot in the sunshiny summertime. So, our radiant blue t-shirts and cosy black shorts would definitely keep us cool and refreshed for the upcoming hot summer days. But if it ever gets chilly, we can always just throw on our tracksuit. Easy-peasy.

#2 We Won’t Have To Waste Any Time Changing

Our sports uniform is the most appropriate clothing to wear whilst participating in sports. So, if we have Winter Sports for example, we won’t have to change at all because we would already be wearing it! But, in case of a totally out of schedule situation where we really do have to get changed, it’s a hundred times quicker to put on and take off. Rapid as a cheetah!

#3 It’s Extremely Uncomfortable For Some Seniors To Get Changed In Front Of Others
Have you realised how uncomfortable it is for the year seven and eight students to get changed in front of the younger students? As we get older, we prefer much more privacy and often find it stressful to get changed.

#4 Girls And Boys Will Be Dressed The Same Way
If our sports uniform would be our ordinary school uniform, girls and boys would justly be wearing the exact outfit. There would be no excruciating complains about girls wearing pleasant, heated uniforms during the bitter, bleak winter time. And, no complains about boys wearing refreshed, chilly uniforms during the blazing summer hours.

In conclusion, I firmly think we should wear our appealing sport uniforms instead of our dull school uniforms. I hope you now understand all the enjoyable, life changing benefits we would receive if we wore our sport uniforms instead of our school uniforms.

Down The Drain

Down The Drain

In the year of 2016, students from Wilford School in Petone were snorkelling at Lowry Bay. They were astonished to find 253 pieces of garbage under the ocean. Three students named Harvey, Ethan and Jemma realised that litter from Petone was getting washed up to their local beach. With that said, the three students decided to do something about it! Harvey, Ethan and Jemma set up traps in two different drains located on Jackson Street, which is the main street in Petone. They examined different technologies and chose to use a model manufactured by LittaTrap™. The first trap was situated outside of restaurants and cafes located in the shopping area. The second trap was positioned at the end of the street encircled by houses. The LittaTraplets the stormwater flow into the underground pipes and catches the garbage. Once a week, their teacher Mrs Webb drove the students to the two locations to empty the traps. Harvey, Ethan and Jemma sorted the garbage into categories including hard and soft plastics, food and paper. Finally, the students counted the items and entered the information onto a spreadsheet. They replicated this process for twelve weeks of time. Did you know glass takes one million years to break down? Surprisingly cardboard only takes 2 months to fully break down. At the end of their inspection, the students spent an evening sharing their discovery with the community. Using a calculator, the students estimated how much garbage is sent to Lowry Bay from Jackson Street every year. There are ninety three drains in total located in and around Jackson Street. One drain sends about 5,720 pieces of garbage a year. That simply meant 531,960 pieces of garbage are sent into Lowry Bay every year.
